Evangelical Brotherhood Church

Who we are

The Evangelical Brotherhood Church is an evangelical Christian denomination in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition that emerged from both the 18th-century Methodist revival in the United Kingdom and the early 19th-century Holiness movement in North America and Switzerland. The name of the denomination comes from the mother church in Switzerland, the Evangelical Brotherhood Church of Switzerland, which evolved from the Lutheran State Church. The Swiss Evangelical Brotherhood church opened the Toormina Church in 1982 as an appendage of its missions in Papua New Guinea. The Swiss Church ran the Toormina church by financing it and administering it until it withdrew in 2005. The Evangelical Brotherhood Church of Toormina then registered as a Statutory Body under its own name and continued to rent the building from the Swiss Evangelical Brotherhood Church.

Since its inception, the Church has indicated that its mission is "to respond to the Great Commission of Christ to ’go and make disciples of all nations’ (Matthew 28:19)." Since the end of 2006, the global mission of the denomination has been expressed more succinctly as "to make Christlike disciples in the nations." The means for accomplishing its mission are by "making disciples through evangelism, education, showing compassion, working for justice, and bearing witness to the kingdom of God." Three ‘core values‘ of the Church have been identified as " Christian, Holiness, Missional." The denominational vision is: "to be a disciple-making church, an international community of faith, in the Wesleyan-Holiness tradition."

The congregation of the Church is a faith community, ready to greet you in Jesus’ name. There you will discover opportunities not only to encounter Jesus as your Saviour and Lord, but to grow as a follower of Christ. Local churches offer ministry opportunities for serving others. Fellowship, worship, training, and education are all part of our life together in Christ. Our vision and mission embraces the entire world. We invite you to experience the unique fellowship of your Church.

We believe that God offers to everyone forgiveness, peace, joy, hope, purpose, love, meaning in life, and the promise of heaven when life is over by entering and experiencing a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We are called to take this message to people everywhere. The Church is a church committed to a life of biblical holiness. We believe that Christians can experience a deeper level of life in which there is victory over sin, power to witness and serve, and a richer fellowship with God, all through the infilling of the Holy Spirit. In recent years, Wesleyan theologians have increasingly understood the movement's distinctive theological doctrine, entire sanctification, as best understood in terms of love. Love is the core notion of the various understandings of holiness and sanctification found in the Bible. Christians are called to love when in relation to God and others.

Our church allows great diversity of opinion on a variety of issues. This may involve the use of a projector to display song and chorus lyrics onto a video screen. More traditional worship services typically contain singing a mix of hymns and contemporary worship songs, prayer, special music, reading of Scripture, sermon, and offering. Services are often focused toward a time of prayer and commitment at the end of the sermon, with people finding spiritual help as they gather for corporate praying.

The Church is intentionally inclusive and compassionate.

Our Values

We are a Christian People

As members of the Church Universal, we join with all true believers in proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ and in embracing the historic Trinitarian creedal statements of Christian faith. We value our Wesleyan-Holiness heritage and believe it to be a way of understanding the faith that is true to Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience.

We are a Holiness People

God, who is holy, calls us to a life of holiness. We believe that the Holy Spirit seeks to do in us a second work of grace, called by various terms including "entire sanctification" and "baptism with the Holy Spirit" - cleansing us from all sin, renewing us in the image of God, empowering us to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind, and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves, and producing in us the character of Christ. Holiness in the life of believers is most clearly understood as Christlikeness.

We are a Missional People

We are a sent people, responding to the call of Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit to go into all the world, witnessing to the Lordship of Christ and participating with God in the building of the Church and the extension of His kingdom (Matthew 28:19-20; 2 Corinthians 6:1).

Our mission...

  • Begins in worship
  • Ministers to the world in evangelism and compassion
  • Encourages believers toward Christian maturity through discipleship
  • Prepares women and men for Christian service through Christian higher education.

Our Beliefs

These are the beliefs that we hold to be true:

We believe in one God - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe that the Old and New Testament Scriptures, given by plenary inspiration, contain all truth necessary to faith and Christian living.

We believe that man is born with a fallen nature, and is, therefore, inclined to evil, and that continually.

We believe that the finally impenitent are hopelessly and eternally lost.

We believe that the atonement through Jesus Christ is for the whole human race; and that whosoever repents and believes on the Lord Jesus Christ is justified and regenerated and saved from the dominion of sin.

We believe that believers are to be sanctified wholly, subsequent to regeneration, through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe that the Holy Spirit bears witness to the new birth, and also to the entire sanctification of believers.

We believe that our Lord will return, the dead will be raised, and the final judgment will take place.

Our Mission

The global mission of the Church is: To make Christlike disciples in the nations.

This mission is built on the Church’s core values of Christianity, holiness, and mission. While the primary motive of the church is to glorify God, we believe that the church is also called to actively participate in His mission of reconciling the world to himself.

The seven words in the statement of mission embody the historical essentials of mission:

  • Evangelism
  • Sanctification
  • Discipleship
  • Compassion
  • Equipping all who respond in faith

The essence of holiness is Christlikeness.

The Church is blessed with some of the most dedicated disciples of any denomination. Our goal is to build on this strength. We're also moving from a 'sending' to a 'sent' church. The responsibility is to be a witness, helping make Christlike disciples, in whatever nation we happen to be.

Our Purpose The Church is a Great Commission church (Matthew 28:19-20). As a global community of faith, we are commissioned to take the Good News of life in Jesus Christ to people everywhere and to spread the message of scriptural holiness (Christlike living) across the lands.

The Church bonds together individuals who have made Jesus Christ Lord of their lives, sharing in Christian fellowship, and seeking to strengthen each other in faith development through worship, preaching, training, and service to others. We strive to express the compassion of Jesus Christ to all persons along with our personal commitment to Christlike living.
